CMST 285 Critical Intercultural Communication

Explore the complexities of intercultural communication in both U.S. and global contexts. Analyze how we, ourselves, and others are shaped by culture and positions of power. Develop and apply intercultural skills to affect social change. Note: CMST 285 and CMST 203 have different content.
Prerequisite Required: Completion of ENGL 99 or equivalent with a 2.0 or better, or placement into ENGL& 101 , or instructor permission.

Course Learning Outcomes:
- Compare and contrast communication from different cultures.
- Apply communication skills across cultural contexts.
- Analyze historical and socially constructed systems of power in US and global contexts.
- Describe how culture shapes social categories (race, class, gender, sexuality, age, ability, citizenship, etc.).
- Recognize critical connections between past and present US and global issues (historical, political, economic, conflict, migration, media, etc.).
- Employ an intercultural framework to evaluate one’s own cultural experiences and identity.
