CMST 203 Communication for Social Change

Explore the ways that power and privilege shape perceptions of and intersections between race, class, gender, sexuality, disability and age. Engage in reflection, discussion, and thought-provoking activities to explore your own identity. Learn communication skills to affect social change. Note: CMST 285 and CMST 203 have different content.
Prerequisite Required: Completion of ENGL 99 or equivalent with a 2.0 or higher, or placement into ENGL& 101 .

Course Learning Outcomes:
- Analyze the structural dynamics and complexity of power, privilege, and oppression in social systems and institutions.
- Take perspectives different from one’s own.
- Analyze how social categories (race, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and ability) shape perceptions, interactions, and communication.
- Connect the intersections of the “isms” (racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism, ageism, and ableism).
- Analyze your own identity development in different social categories and how your positionality influences your communication choices.
- Apply communication strategies and problem-solving skills for effective social action within your personal spheres of influence.
