About the AA-DTA/MRP in Computer Science
The Associate in Computer Science (AA-DTA/MRP) degree is a highly prescribed version of the Associate in Arts, AA-DTA with a Computer Science focus. This two-year degree covers the fundamental building blocks of computer science, including computer programming, collaboration, and problem solving. Coursework equips students with the essential skills needed to skill-up or transfer to a four-year university for further education. With growing needs in the tech industry, an associate degree in computer science can set the foundation for a variety of career opportunities in fields such as software development, cybersecurity, data science, and more. Below is a summary of the categories of required courses for the AA-DTA. Courses listed are required for the Computer Science MRP. See below for available courses in each category. General Education - 20 Credits
Courses used to meet General Education (Gen Ed) core requirements may not also be used to meet distribution requirements. Quantitative/Symbolic Reasoning (5 Credits)
Humanities (15 Credits)
Select from at least two different disciplines (e.g., Art and Drama) in Humanities . Maximum of 5 credits allowed in Performance Skills courses. No more than 5 credits in a world language at the 100 level. Natural Sciences (15-18.5 Credits)
Select three Natural Sciences courses that best suit your intended transfer universities. Depending on the transfer destination, additional science and math may be required. PHYS& 223 , MATH& 163 and Statistics (either MATH& 146 or MATH 211 ) and/or other upper level math may be required. Option 2:
Three lab sciences from at least 2 different disciplines. Students choosing this option should check with an advisor and intended transfer universities. Social Sciences (15 Credits)
Select from at least two different disciplines (e.g., Psychology and History) in Social Sciences . Computer Science Foundational Courses - 10 Credits
General Electives - 20-35 Credits
Comprised of other college-level courses or unrestricted courses. A maximum of 15 credits allowed for restricted/vocational courses, and a maximum of 3 credits allowed in Physical Education. Please see the lists of Restricted Electives and Elective Courses (Non-restricted) . Check with your transfer institution for specific requirements for your Computer Science program. Requirements vary widely among 4-year programs. Typical electives include: CS 110 , CS 151 (recommend for students bound for programs requiring C++), CS 211 , MATH& 146 , MATH& 163 , MATH 207 , MATH 208 , MATH 211 , MATH& 264 . Check with an advisor before making class selection. Recommended: COL 101 College and Career Success - Applies as a 3-credit Restricted Elective. Transfer Notes:
University of Washington Seattle: MATH& 151 , MATH& 152 , MATH& 163 , CS& 141 , CS 143 and either PHYS& 221 OR CHEM 171 /CHEM 181 . Students will need a second quarter of science for graduation so they should take it at Shoreline. University of Washington Bothell: CS& 141 , CS 143 , MATH& 151 , MATH& 152 , and statistics required. Seattle University: CS& 141 , CS 143 , MATH& 151 , MATH& 152 , (MATH& 163 and MATH 208 highly recommended) PHYS& 221 , PHYS& 222 , PHYS& 223 . Central Washington University: MATH& 151 , CS& 141 , CS 143 . Washington State University Pullman: CS& 141 , CS 143 , MATH& 151 , MATH& 152 , MATH& 163 , MATH 208 , MATH& 264 , PHYS& 221 , PHYS& 222 , PHYS& 223 (requirements vary at other WSU campuses). Seattle Pacific University: Two bachelor’s degree options are available.
