Where does my path start?


You will complete an Associate in Arts - Direct Transfer Agreement  (AA-DTA) at Shoreline.

Once you complete your Shoreline degree, you can transfer to a four-year school to earn a baccalaureate degree in Law or Criminal Justice.

What courses should I take?

This unofficial guide is intended to support you as you prepare for your major. Please consult with an advisor and your chosen four-year school(s), as program and admissions requirements vary and may change without notice.

NOTE: Credit may be awarded by the CJ advisor for Police academy or in-service police training.

General Education Requirements - 20 Credits


Courses used to meet General Education requirements cannot also be used to meet distribution requirements.

Communication (10 Credits)


Multicultural Understanding (5 Credits)


Select one of the following courses:

CMST 203 , CMST 285 , GWS 284 , HIST& 220 , HIST 245 , HUM 105 , AES 101 , PSYC 230 , SOC 270 .

Quantitative/Symbolic Reasoning (5 Credits)


Choose one of the following classes:

MATH& 107 , MATH 111 , MATH& 141 , MATH& 142 , MATH& 146 , MATH& 148 , MATH& 151 , MATH& 152 , MATH& 163 , MATH 207 , MATH 208 , MATH 211 , MATH& 264 , PHIL& 120 . Recommended: MATH& 107 MATH& 141  (if Forensic Science), or MATH& 146 .

* Students planning to transfer to the University of Washington must consult Math Advising, mathadvising@shoreline.edu.

Distribution Requirements - 45 Credits


The same course cannot be used in two distribution areas (e.g. both Humanities and Social Sciences). 

Humanities (15 Credits)


Select from at least two different disciplines (e.g., Art and Drama) in Humanities . Maximum of 5 credits allowed in Performance Skills  courses. No more than 5 credits in a world language at the 100 level. Recommended: CMST& 101  or PHIL 248  .

Natural Sciences (15 Credits)


Select from at least two different disciplines (e.g.Biology and Physics) in Natural Sciences . At least 10 credits required in Physical, Earth, and/or Biological Sciences, including at least 5 credits of lab science. Maximum 5 credits from Other Science courses. Recommended*: BIOL& 211 , BIOL& 241 ; CHEM 171 /CHEM 181  for B.S. and Forensic Science degrees.

Social Sciences (15 Credits)


Select from at least two different disciplines (e.g., Psychology and History) in Social Sciences . Recommended: CAST 102 /SOC 102 , CAST 202 /SOC 202 , CAST 285 /GWS 285 , CJ 135 /SOC 135 , CJ 136 /SOC 136 , CJ 137 /SOC 137 , PSYC& 100 , PSYC& 220 POLS& 202 .

General Electives - Minimum 25 Credits


Comprised of other college-level courses or unrestricted courses. A maximum of 15 credits allowed for restricted/vocational courses, and a maximum of 3 credits allowed in Physical Education. Please see the lists of Restricted Electives  and Elective Courses (Non-restricted) . Recommended*: CJ& 106 , CJ& 110 CJ 120 , CJ 135 , CJ 238 , CJ 241 , CJ 249 , BIOL& 242 , CHEM& 241 /CHEM 271 , CHEM& 242 /CHEM 272 , CHEM& 243 /CHEM 273 , CHEM 172 /CHEM 182 , CHEM 173 /CHEM 183 , PSYC& 200 , PSYC 236 , PSYC 245 . Strongly recommended: CJ& 101 .

It is also recommended that students complete a certificate of completion in Child Advocacy Studies (CAST)  or Criminal Justice Advocacy (CJAC)  depending on students’ interest in the area.

* If pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science you will need MATH& 141  and MATH& 142 , CHEM 171 /CHEM 181 CHEM 172 /CHEM 182 , CHEM 173 /CHEM 183 , CHEM& 241 , CHEM& 242 , BIOL& 211 , BIOL& 241 , BIOL& 242 , and PHYS& 114 . See your advisor for more information.

Before choosing classes, become familiar with the four-year program where you want to apply: visit the website, email the department, and/or speak with a Shoreline advisor.
