MUSTC 155 Synthesizers: Sampling Minimum Units: 3 Maximum Units: 3 Recorded audio is used to create instruments and sound effects by applying the fundamental techniques of sampling, wavetable and granular synthesis (looping, pitch change, keyboard mapping, velocity layers). Modular synth construction software use for demonstration and analysis of basic sampling concepts. Prerequisite Required: MUSTC 151 with a grade of P or 2.0 or better, or instructor permission. Add Consent: Not Required Drop Consent: Not Required Grading System: Student option grading Course Typically Offered: Fall Course Learning Outcomes:
- Explain the theory of sampling including pitch multiplication, time-stretch, wave looping, single-cycle looping and one-shot sampling.
- Apply sampling theory to multi-sampling for instrument emulation using techniques of keyboard zoning, crossfade zones, velocity layering and exporting into a variety of multi-sample formats.
- Use and describe various sampler applications, for example, drum sampling, groove loops, and recording live instruments for samplers.
- Describe and utilize other related forms of sampling: granular synthesis and wave-shaping.
