MUSTC 106 Acoustics of Music Minimum Units: 5 Maximum Units: 5 Students are introduced to the acoustical properties of sound and music. The course begins with an introduction to simple vibrating systems, wave and wave propagation and progress and goes through the reception of sound, frequency and pitch to auditorium and room acoustics. Prerequisite Required: Successful completion (2.0 or better) or placement into MATH 99 . - Describe and apply basic physical quantities and laws including measurement units for distance, time, mass, frequency, force, energy, and power.
- Determine and express mathematically and/or verbally the relationships among frequency, wavelength, and musical pitch for sounds in air.
- Describe the characteristics of the human hearing system using standard formulas, functions and common numeric constants where appropriate.
- Solve technical problems relating to sound reflection and absorption behavior in small and large rooms using standard formulas, functions and graphs where appropriate.
