MATH& 141 Precalculus I

The elementary functions and their graphs, with applications to mathematical modeling. Examples include linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions, composite functions, inverse functions and transformation of graphs. Pre-calculus I (college algebra) for students in science, engineering, and math.
Prerequisite Required: Placement into MATH& 141 or MATH 111 .

Course Learning Outcomes:
  • Use function notation correctly.
  • Deduce how transformations of a function affect its graph (translations, reflections, scalings).
  • Combine two or more functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, composition) symbolically and graphically.
  • Identify important features such as shape, intercepts, turning points, asympototes for graphs of polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions.
  • Determine the equation for a given function’s inverse.
  • Choose type of and write models to use to solve problems. Functions types are: power, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic.
  • Given a situation modeled by a function, solve problems and draw conclusions. Functions types include power, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic.
  • Solve exponential and logarithmic equations.
