MUSC 207 The Craft of Songwriting

Students examine the craft of writing a song and investigate how structure, melody, and lyrics function together to create a well-written song. The history of songwriting and the classic work of great songwriters are used to explore the process of songwriting.

Course Learning Outcomes:
  • Analyze poetry and lyrics in classic and contemporary songs.
  • Write detailed analyses of song lyrics to ascertain meaning.
  • Write lyrics for original songs.
  • Research classic songs, songwriters and the history of American song using the Internet, sheet music and audio recordings.
  • Identify issues of plagiarism and copyright infringements as related to songwriting.
  • Evaluate classic songs in history to trace and identify their influence on subsequent styles of song writing.
