ENGL 90 Reading and Writing in the Academic Subjects

Maximum Units: 5
Students develop abilities for successful reading, writing and learning in college. They learn how knowledge and information are organized in college and how to improve achievement across disciplines. Students explore academic/career goals. Usually offered in conjunction with STYSK 100 for a total of 10 credits.
Prerequisite Required: Placement into ENGL 90, or instructor permission.

Course Learning Outcomes:
- Use a reading process to understand, think critically about and remember academic material at a beginning college level.
- Use a writing process to create 2 to 3-page college-level essays adhering to standards of focus, development, organization and correctness.
- Use a variety of thinking strategies in their reading and writing: analysis, application, synthesis, problem solving, decision-making, evaluation, and personalization.
- Use an understanding of college culture to find their places and roles in an academic community.
- Research and write about the organization and nature of college subjects.
- Use the understand that various disciplines and subjects entail different ways of thinking (analyzing, problem solving, using evidence, etc.) and of writing to study and write effectively in different disciplines.
